If you want to, you can find a thousand variations for henna recipes. Some have beautiful stories surrounding them (a memory of Grandmother stirring cloves and spices together with tea over an open fire) and others sound just crazy enough to work (mix 1 part coffee with 1 part camel urine). We promise, with quality ingredients and a little patience you will get excellent results every time with the Henna Caravan KISS recipe.
What's the KISS Recipe, you ask? Keep It Simple, Sister! You just need four ingredients, starting with premium quality fresh henna powder. Add an essential oil high in monoterpene alcohols, some sugar to balance the consistency, and lemon juice to keep the paste stable, and you're nearly there. This is the only henna recipe you'll need for reliable, consistent results time after time.

Here's a convenient PDF printable (it's coming soon), or you can just keep reading below for the complete step by step.

step-4.pngWrap it up

  • Cover the surface of the henna paste with saran wrap (or a plastic bag) and gently press down so it's touching the surface and there's no air contact

step-5.pngKeep it warm for 24 hours

  • Let the covered henna paste rest in a warm location for 24 hours (about 75 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • It’s always best if you use a thermometer to monitor temperature. You don’t want to ‘cook’ your henna and ruin it. Digital Candy thermometers work great.

step-6.pngCheck consistency

  • When 24 hours has passed, take off the plastic wrap and give it a good stir
  • Adjust your consistency. To thin the paste add 1/4 teaspoon lemon juice at a time until your desired consistency is reached. To thicken the paste add a pinch of henna powder.
  • At HC we like a henna paste that 'ribbons' or flows off the spoon. Some like it thinner, some like it thicker.

 step-finished.pngFill applicators and go draw!

  • Fill your applicator cone or bottles now
  • Go draw beautiful designs!

step-storagea.png

  • Store leftover paste in the freezer for 6-12 months.
  • Defrost at room temperature.
  • Only defrost the amount you’ll use that day, multiple freeze and thaws will compromise the stain quality.

Bootcamp Basics: Build Your Skills
tut-bootcamp-step3.jpg

step-protip.png

Henna is a skill and skills can be learned and refined with practice. Anyone can master the art of henna/mehndi, you've just got to put in the time!

Just like an athlete that trains and runs drills, artists must train too. Thankfully we don't have to get sweaty and there's no need for special uniforms and gear. We just need some henna, something to draw on and some time.

Building 'muscle memory' is key to mastering henna and the family of shapes we use in the designs. 'Muscle memory' is key for an athlete but it can also unlock the door for a henna artist. The more we practice and train our hands and brains, the easier and more natural the skills become. These basic skills will become second nature and as we master them it becomes easier and easier to build complex patterns with graceful fluid elements.

So - get to it! Practice makes progress!

step-1a.pngGather your Supplies
  • Filled Henna Cones
  • Lotion cones will work too, but there's nothing like practicing with the real deal to perfect your skills
  • Print out copies of the Bootcamp Basic practice pages
  • Acrylic Practice Boards/Hands are fun to practice on if you have one, go grab it.

step-howtouse.png

  • Set aside 10 minutes to 1 hour to practice Bootcamp Drills
  • Daily practice will help you to grow the fastest but even practicing a few times a week will yield results! Bottom line, just do it, do what you can, whatever that may be.
  • Begin at the beginning. Practice those dots, hundreds of times, until they are perfect. The goal is to practice these basic elements until your hand/brain can do them perfectly (or nearly) without effort or thought.
  • Once you can create these tiny elements perfectly, it will open up your brain to create more complicated designs. You'll be shocked at how easy the next steps are when you have the foundation basics perfected.
  • You'll struggle to create fluid, graceful complex designs if you can't create fluid and graceful simple elements.
  • Don't rush your practice! You are building your muscle memory now and what you practice is what you'll do.
